As much as I enjoy getting up in the morning and teaching 150 college freshman, the end of the semester is enough to make me break out into song. I usually feel a little sadness that another class has come and gone. Some of them I might have moved in some way, some will never think of me again. Some I will miss, some I will not.
Now don't get me wrong, I do love my job. I also love most of my students. This semester has been one that has been full of large attitudes and even bigger egos. I knew teaching in Camden wouldn't be easy, but some classes are worse than others. One of my classes is made of 35 college freshman, most of whom I doubt will make it to their second year. I cannot fault the students themselves because they were never taught to learn. I took for granted how important the early years of my education were. All you have to do is read the writing of a person who is the product of the Camden school system and you will know what I mean. I can usually take this fact, but this in addition to a class of students who really don't want to be there is torture. This is a semester that I pray ends quickly and quietly.

I admire you for teaching where you do. Teachers are amazing people no matter what, but the ones that choose to teach in inner-city areas or work with disadvantaged students truly are to be admired.
