A couple of you posted questions about what Grace's single kidney means long-term. The wonderful thing about having only one kidney is that we only need one! I know you know that but if you are going to be missing one of anything, that is the things to be missing. I do have a family history of having only one kidney or a horseshoe kidney, where they fuse together.
The docs made sure that the renal artery was functioning perfectly and that the existing kidney is larger to compensate for the missing kidney. They told us that everything with the existing kidney is perfect. The only thing they will probably keep a close eye on is the piece of tissue that is attached to the bottom of the kidney. It is probably the second kidney which never grew. They will watch it to make sure that it is not a tumor.
The doc said that long term they will ve extra careful that she never gets a kidney infection or an injury. Other than that she should have a perfectly normal life.

As Grace's Great Aunt, I did not find out I only had 1 kidney until after 4 kids and the age of 40 and my grandmother wasn't diagnosed with 1 kidney till she was 87. Gracie joins an elite group of girls. Great Aunt Donna, litterally
