This week during OT I was telling Nicole about a great book I am reading, The Out of Sync Child Has Fun. Our speech therapist, Cathy let me borrow it last week and I am already done reading it. It was awesome. It didn't just do the usual bookish thing of outlining a disorder, explain why and how and then send you on your merry way to figure it all out. Instead this book outlines WHAT TO DO with your sensory kid. I love that. I love ideas that are fun and playful but also keep in mind that I can't always do the "typical" things with my kids like go to the park or the library. On certain days they just can't handle that.
Anyway, back to where I started. I was telling Nicole about all the awesome strategies/games that were in this book. We got to talking about how we wish there was a better resource for parents of kids with sensory dysnfunction that focuses solely on what works and what doesn't. A place to get ideas for how to play with your "sensory kid". While I am no author and this is not that kind of blog, per say, I thought it might not be a bad idea to blog about what works and what doesn't. I have two "sensory kids" with very different sensory needs. Gracie is a mix of sensory seeking and sensory avoiding (she loves to crash and bash but she hates the feeling of tags and waist-bands). Abby, on the other hand, is low registration.
So with this in mind I will make a pointed effort of blogging about our sensory strategies. Some are things I get from books. Others come from Nicole. And some we just make up ourselves. I am NOT trying to take credit for any of them as I am sure none of my ideas are originals. So if you have a sensory kid or know one you can read. If not, you can go ahead a skip that post.
We'll see if it is at all helpful. :D
