This morning was the first assessment meeting for the girls to enter into the special needs preschool in our school district. The way it works is at whatever age EI ends in your state (if it is prior to kindergarten age) the state is responsible to supply an educational program that spans from the end of EI until the start of kindergarten. In NJ EI ends at 3 so that means they have to provide preschool until age 5. Lucky for us we moved into the best school district in the county (and not by accident).
I will shorten my very long story (as I am hours behind on work from all these darn meetings) as best I can. The girls and I were accompanied by my Mom and the girls EI Service Coordinator so there was the 5 of us. From the school there were 6 people in attendance. Everyone from psychology to special ed to therapists. We talked about the girls history, their therapy and their needs. The decided that Abby will be assessed for PT and OT (surprise, surprise) and Gracie will be assessed by OT, speech, learning and cognitive (she is having some trouble learning basic concepts). I wasn't at all surprised by any of it. The assessments were what I thought the would be.
So over the next month or two each of the girls will have to go through testing. They will try to separate them from me during testing (which will not be easy) and do as much as they can each time they see the girls. It will be a little while before any decisions of eligibility will be made. I am just hoping the process is a fairly smooth one.
