Before we have our children I think we all have those "well, I am never going to..." moments. We "innocently" share all of the things that we will never allow our future children to do. We feel confident in our assertions and we are not afraid to share them. We will boldly say these things to a Mom or a Dad right as their children are taking part in that very activity. I try to live my live with a never say never attitude but I am sure I have done this very thing myself (hopefully more politely in my head than out loud as others have done to me).
In my head I vowed some of the following and so many more:
I am never going to let my children:
- Eat any food in front of the tv
- Walk around the house with a drink
- Watch more than 30 minutes of tv a day (HA!)
- Jump on the furniture
- Suck a pacie or carry a blanket past two
- Have dessert if they don't all of their dinner
- Stay up until 10pm just so I can sleep in the next morning
- Tell me they hate me
- Eat off my plate
- Sit on my lap during dinner
- Hit others
- Make a mess and then I have to clean it
Why do we do this? Why do we have such unrealistic expectations? Are we all so vain that we think our parenting style is going to be so superior to those around us that these things will NEVER happen to us? That we will somehow transcend the exhaustion and stress of parenting and be PERFECT???
Well my friends... I am far from perfect. I think we all know that at this point. It all went to hell when I had a baby. In fact two of them at once. And all those "I'm never gonna's" flew quickly out of the window. I am not sure if that makes me a better parent or a worse one. What I do know is it makes me a realist... a survivalist. Bear Grylls look out!
