After nap yesterday the girls and I set off to watch Will and Jordan compete in a local summer track meet. It is an informal meet where track kids can stay sharp and have a little fun at the same time. The weather wasn't too bad (and in NJ this summer "not to bad" means anything under 95 degrees after 5) so we figured why not. We got there and hung out for a while. When the kids started getting ready to run we realized that there was a group of little kids with "racing bibs" (the numbers you pin to your shirt) lining up. My Mom ran over to the registration desk and inquired and it turns out in every even they have an Under 5 heat.
My Mom signed them up while I got them ready as best I can. We pinned their bibs to their DRESSES (and they were wearing sandals) and sent them out. The first race was a 50 meter under 5 race. My Mom stayed with them at the start and I went to the finish so they knew where to race. While I waited for the whistle to go (they forgo the gun in this group... thank God) I repeated over and over in my head "don't fall, don't fall, don't fall, don't fall". The whistle blew and to my shock NEITHER ONE FELL! Grace actually came in third which was huge since most of the kids were 4 and 5. And amazingly... Abby beat someone. She was a little girl with ill fitting shorts that were falling off and she was crying for her Mommy but Abby beat her by two steps. ;D
Abby was exhausted from that 50 meters so she sat out the rest of the races but Gracie's team took 1st (out of 1 team ;D) in the 4 by 50 meter relay and she was 4th out of 6 in the 100. She had an absolute blast. It was such a lovely unexpected uprise.
Unfortunately for the boys this turned out to be a much less intense meet than we have become accustomed too. Jordans age group was a joke and he smoked every kid his age by a mile. Will is not a runner but decided to do it for fun and he did awesome. His times were within two hundredths of Jordans which is pretty darn good (he ran a 15.2 100 today for the runners out there)
