After our last (failed) attempt at potty training we curtailed our training for a little bit. We all felt like perhaps NONE OF US were quite ready for the rigors of PTing. This weekend we decided it was time to try again. Brian has been home for four days so I knew I would have some much needed reinforcements. We decided against using panties this time and opted instead of the "wear nothing on the bottom" technique. We allow them, while we are home of course, to run around bottomless... making it easy to hop on the potty if you need to go.
Here is the crazy part... within two days Abby has got it. ABBY! The one who we thought would take months to learn the muscle control part. She is not only peeing on the potty but pooping too. (Sorry for the visual on this one.) She wears a diaper while sleeping and a pull up when we go out but she is having few accidents. We could not be more proud and amazed at what she is doing. The kid is unbelievable.
And that brings us to Grace. My poor little ball of nerves. Potting training is proving so much harder for Grace than we ever thought. We were certain that she would train in no time and Abby would be the one who lingered. We could not have been more wrong. Every time it is time to try on the potty Grace has a melt down. It is all about control for her. We know that. It doesn't make it any easier. There is this fine line between pushing the issue and creating an issue. Right now it feels like we are skirting that line.
We are hoping that she will have a lightbulb moment and suddenly "get it". Who knows though. I realize now how naive I was to think that a kid with issues like hers would take to it so easily. She doesn't handle change AT ALL. She hates trying new things and she hates failing. These are all strikes against her.
So we'll keep plugging along. Reveling in their small successes and praying to be (somewhat) diaper-free in the coming months. Stay tuned...
