This week our pool opened. It opened it's doors and welcomed us in with air in the 90's and water in the 70's. To me it was a hot day with much too chilly water. But to my children it was something different. It was the beginning of some new and beautiful. A new summer. A new chance to shrug off the confines of backbacks and therapy and trade it in for bathing suits and sunscreen. Instead of snacks packed in zippered bags we enjoyed perfectly ripe fruit and yogurt (soy of course) right out of the carton. Through their eyes I realized it's perfection. Summer isn't a time of opressively hot weather and nothing to do. It is a warm time with endless hours of potential. What I see as a boring afternoon sitting at a pool trying to keep them busy and out of trouble is a chance for them to make new neighborhood friends.
So now my job is to try my best to see this summer through their eyes. To return to the days when my opportunies to fun and adventure were endless. Where yogurt and granola was the best lunch on earth. Where hours and hours at the pool were nothing short of heaven.
That's the kind of summer I want.
