I am not a big fan of fast food. I don't like eating it and I HATE giving it to my kids. I know I have posted about this before so long time readers pardon the repeat. :D
While I am not the world's biggest fast food fan (unless you count Chipotle as fast food!) I also think that it's important for kids like mine (who eat a largely vegan/organic diet) to get some of the "traditional" kid experiences... like an occasional kids meals.
Today started off rocky. Abby has been up super early lately. We haven't slept much of the nights lately. I was exhausted and stressed. It led to a perfect storm of head butting and will testing. I decided getting out of the house was going to be our best bet. We hit the road and strolled through Babies R Us for a while. On the way home as I contemplated lunch I saw the sign for Wendy's and decided today was the perfect day for a "Car Picnic".
Since we don't do much fast food it tends to be an "experience" for the girls. The weather was insane today (62 degrees at 11am) so we got two kids meals, turned the radio up, rolled the window's down and enjoyed a car picnic (the girls made that name up). I can proudly say that I experienced not one iota of guilt. No pangs of having spent $10 unnecessarily. No second guessing the choice of french fries and hamburgers instead of hummus and pretzels.
And for ten beautiful minutes they ate and sang and smiled. You'd have thought it was Disney World. Amen to the Car Picnic. I highly suggest you try it!

I will admit, that we do fast food more often that you guys. When Kate was doing gymnastics it was every Tuesday night after class; now I might grab lunch 2-3 times a month. Much better than some families I know but still not as good as we could be.
I'm a firm believer though that children need to have treats once in a while and be allowed to have "fun" stuff like that in moderation. I think allowing them to have something occasionally keeps them from binging on it when they go out on their own. A friend of mine never had any sugary cereals in the house growing up; when she would go over to a sleepover and had the access to it, she'd eat 2-3 (or more) bowls of cereal.
I don't know. Maybe it's me trying to justify my lazy parenting. Again. ;)
I definitely don't think it's laziness. When you hear that the average family eats out of the house DAILY it floors me. I would be so sick of it! I think that when you eat out rarely enough that they still get excited to get food out then you've got the balance worked out!
