We started off the school year with one very happy kindergartener (the one that goes half day) and one very sad kinder (the full day kiddo). In the past few weeks we have seen a very stark shift. Abby LOVES school. She loves her class, she loves her teacher and she LOVES her new best friend Tory! They have become inseparable and I love that. Abby struggles socially (to the point that "having one friend" was in her IEP last year) so the fact that she has a best friend is amazing.
On the other, less exciting hand, Grace is not loving school. Her original teacher left much earlier than expected for maternity leave. The new teacher came in before being ready. The class has a lot of students who "rev high" like Grace does so there is a lot of chaos. The worst part is that Grace is bored. She spends a lot of her day completing photocopied worksheets of things she did last year and the year before. Although she is classified as "gifted" she is getting no challenge at all.
But what do I do with it? I signed her up for abcmouse.com (which we are LOVING!) and got her a slew of workbooks. I work with her each afternoon for a while to challenge her curious little mind. It's still frustrating for both of us. We go through the motions of school but she isn't getting much out of it.
Conferences are around the corner and I am hoping to be able to politely air some of my grievances but I am just not sure how much will really change. I just wish she was having a better kinder experience...
