Last week I was showering the girls and they had a serious case of the sillies. I was trying to get them in and out so I wasn't exactly sharing in the sillies. When I shut off the water Grace tells me that her hair wasn't completely rinsed out. I tell her that it's good enough and it will have to do. She responds with "Well Mom, you know I don't want my hair to look like crap." In that moment I needed a giant pause button on the Mom Role. For some reason this struck me as so funny that I burst out laughing. She looked like she thought I was going to yell at her (we don't allow any cursing) and instead she was shocked by my laughter. I stifled the laughter (sort of) and told her not to say crap. Of course she responds with "hey, you laughed".
It got me thinking... Is it okay to pause the Mom role, just for a second, and be a friend? I think it's okay. I think it shows that we are people too. That we are vulnerable to a funny moment. That we can take ourselves a little less serious now and again. I genuinely believe that it's the parents job to parent and not be a friend but I think for just a moment here and there we can laugh when they're naughty. :D
