I think in another lifetime I must have been a homeschooler. I LOVE the idea of homeschooling. I love the practicality of it. I love the idea of choosing what an how much children learn. I love that I could use less traditional methods than the classroom. But alas... I just don't seem to have the constitution for it.
I've considered it. I really, really have. The fact that both girls receive special services in school made the decision for me. They get the best OT, PT and Speech around and I don't pay anything extra for it. It made the decision to send them a lot easier. But it still troubles us.
We're not in love with the education our kids are getting. We live in a GREAT school system and have a ton of resources. But school is an unfortunate reflection of our society. Teachers have less control. Principals have less control. The curriculum focuses on a lot of social issues that we feel should be addressed in the home. It's hard.
The path we have chosen for now is to continue sending them. We have made the downstairs of our house like a home based classroom so that the learning can continue when they get home. It's our chance to teach them what we want and what we don't think the school is doing enough of (math, reading, geography, science, history, etc.)
I thought I would share some of our ideas and organization. If anyone has any great ideas PLEASE SHARE!

We use a bin system for things that go back and forth to school and things that are just home resources
Everything is kept readily accessible in the playroom so they can do workbooks or read whenever they like.
We make sure to have all of the equipment to keep us moving forward.
Oddly enough it works. Having learning materials all around us creates an environment where we all want to learn. It's not unusual for someone to pick up a worksheet of the United States and start coloring.
I even went so far as to hire a great teaching assistant. He works cheap.
