I don't know if you have heard of Kiva before but if you haven't you should look into it. Basically it is a website that allows people to give a small amount of money to be given as a micro-loan to a person in another part of the world who will use the loan to better themselves and their family.

Your loan reaches borrowers via our Field Partners, who vet, distribute, and administer each loan.
You’ll get periodic updates about the progress of your loan, including repayments as they become available.
Watch your free trial loan get repaid, then get inspired to lend again! When you do, repayments will be yours to keep.
The college I teach at has been sponsoring a Kiva team and I was given a link to invite friends and family. It allows you a free $25 trial to loan to someone in need.
